Bridgeside Counseling and Neurofeedback

Neuro\Programmer Enhanced CD’s

Brainwave Entrainment refers to the brain’s electrical response to rhythmic sensory stimulation, such as pulses of sound or light.

When the brain is given a stimulus, through the ears, eyes or other senses, it emits an electrical charge in response, called a Cortical Evoked Response(shown below). These electrical responses travel throughout the brain to become what you “see and hear”. This activity can be measured using sensitive electrodes attached to the scalp.

When the brain is presented with a rhythmic stimulus, such as a drum beat for example, the rhythm is reproduced in the brain in the form of these electrical impulses. If the rhythm becomes fast and consistent enough, it can start to resemble the natural internal rhythms of the brain, called brainwaves.. When this happens, the brain responds by synchronizing its own electric cycles to the same rhythm. This is commonly called the Frequency Following Response (or FFR):

Using Neuro Programmer software we can create personalized CD’s for brainwave entrainment. We have a variety of neutral background sounds available or we can use your favorite music CD’s (with some limitations)

These CD’s can be used to help guide your brainwaves into a wide variety of of states from relaxing and going to sleep to sharp focus when reading or studying.

Bridgeside Counseling and NeurofeedbackThe Freeze-Framer Interactive Learning SystemHeart Rate Variability

The Freeze-Framer Interactive Learning System is an easy-to-use software program, learning system and patented heart rhythm monitor developed by HeartMath’s founder, Doc Childre that tracks heart rate variability. You will learn how to intentionally shift to a positive emotional state and will be able to see the changes in your heart rhythms immediately on your computer screen.

These shifts in your heart rhythms create a favorable cascade of neural, hormonal and biochemical events that benefit the entire body and mind. Blood pressure drops. Stress hormones plummet. The immune system pumps up. Anti-aging hormones increase. You gain clarity, calmness and control. The effects are both immediate and long lasting.

Heart rate variability (HRV) is a cutting-edge measurement of cardiovascular health. It’s so new that your doctor can’t check it with a simple test, and so subtle that you can’t assess it by taking your own pulse. “More HRV means your heart is better able to adapt to changing circumstances,” Bacon says. Less HRV means nerves and heart muscle can’t respond easily to change.

HeartMath research has shown that emotions are reflected in our heart rhythm patterns. The analysis of Heart Rate Variability (HRV), or heart rhythms, is recognized as a powerful, non-invasive measure that reflects heart-brain interactions and autonomic nervous system dynamics, which are particularly sensitive to changes in the emotional state. New clinical research identifies HRV as a key indicator of preventable stress and shows correlation with a broad range of related health problems.

Alpha-Stim Crainal Electrotherapy Stimulation

The Alpha-Stim 100 treats anxiety, depression and insomnia. Alpha-Stim is very safe. Only one out of 506 people will experience a mild headache, and one out of 910 will have a skin reaction at the electrode site, usually a minor self-limiting reddening of the skin. There are no other significant side effects reported in over 55 research studies, or in 24 years of clinical and home use.

How Alpha-Stim® Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation (CES)Works

James Giordano, Ph.D.

The exact mechanism by which Alpha-Stim produces effects is not fully known. However, based on previous and ongoing studies, it appears that the Alpha-Stim microcurrent waveform activates particular groups of nerve cells that are located at the brainstem. These groups of nerve cells produce the chemicals serotonin and acetylcholine which can affect the chemical activity of nerve cells that are both nearby and at more distant sites in the nervous system. In fact, these cells are situated to control the activity of nerve pathways that run up into the brain and that course down into the spinal cord. By changing the electrical and chemical activity of certain nerve cells in the brainstem, Alpha-Stim appears to amplify activity in some neurological systems, and diminish activity in others. This neurological ‘fine tuning’ is called modulation, and occurs either as a result of, or together with the production of a certain type of electrical activity pattern in the brain known as an alpha state which can be measured on brain wave recordings (called electro-encephalograms, abbreviated EEG). Such alpha rhythms are accompanied by feelings of calmness, relaxation and increased mental focus. The neurological mechanisms that are occurring during the alpha state appear to decrease stress-effects, reduce agitation and stabilize mood, and regulate both sensations and perceptions of particular types of pain.

These effects can be produced after a single treatment, and repeated treatments have been shown to increase the relative strength and duration of these effects. In some cases, effects have been stable and permanent, suggesting that the electrical and chemical changes evoked by Alpha-Stim have led to a durable re-tuning back to normal function.
